AI – an inevitable technology?

People naturally resist change. The use of technology can be resisted up to a certain limit. Some technologies overcome resistance and are therefore inevitable. Does artificial intelligence have the potential to become inevitable in the education system?

Once I had a sports motorcycle that can reach a speed of 300 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 in 4 seconds. We usually give properties to machines, in this case fast and strong, and there are other properties we give to technologies such as smart, sexy, intriguing… in this post I am interested in examining a feature that I call “inevitable”, i.e. is it possible that the technology or its use cannot be stopped.

For example, let’s say that you are fundamentally against a mobile phone. Now you come to a job interview and proudly announce that you don’t have a mobile phone, what are the chances that you will get the job? Mobile phone is an inevitable technology. More examples? Look around you, electricity, running water, WAZE, transportation, communication… think of a contractor who opposes sewage systems, a farmer who doesn’t want to work with a tractor…

The question I want to examine is what are the chances that artificial intelligence will become an inevitable technology in education?

For example, let’s say that there is a future technology that is embedded in our child’s lenses, listens all the time to what is happening around him, will know when a child is being bullied, and immediately summon an adult intervention. In this case, the parents will insist that their child be connected to technology all the time (including at school). Now that the child carries such a technology, he/she will also be able to use it to answer the teacher’s questions, to hit on a girl/boy or to cross the road. This is an inevitable technology since the Ministry of Education will not be able to oppose it either.

In order for the technology to become inevitable, it must be general – that is, used for a variety of uses, total – that is, it works all the time with several senses (seeing, hearing, smelling), intelligent – one that is able to understand humans, must know the user – knows a lot of details about the user, in broad circulation – billions of users in the world.

The artificial intelligence that already exists today is general and intelligent, the trend at the moment is for rapid expansion (hopefully this is not a hype), it is not yet total since it still does not see or hear but in my estimation, in combination with the developments in Metaverse (about this in a separate chapter), the day is not far when the system can “see and hear”. Also, the system does not yet know the user, even though the capabilities are already there, the issue of privacy protection may prevent usage such as personal counseling.

It follows from this that there is a good chance that artificial intelligence will not only enter our lives but also the education system!
